Metadata is added by the system, the application the file was created in, and also by people who work with that file. Some examples of metadata are the file creation date, author name and any reversions or edits made on the document.

some clients will choose to split these responsibilities across multiple stakeholders, while others may appoint one or two individuals to take on multiple roles.
