Economic pressures and a client-initiated drive toward greater operational efficiency have law firms looking at alternative methods of decreasing costs while maintaining or improving service quality. Technology now plays an integral role in the daily lives of lawyers and support staff, critical in maximizing their productivity.
BigHand commissioned legal management consultancy Altman Weil, Inc. to carry out the most in-depth and detailed study of its kind on the North American legal market to identify and gain insight into communication trends between lawyers and their support staff. In the second half of 2010, Altman Weil spoke to 82 persons in 78 law firms across North America. Participants ranged from CIOs and IT Directors to Executive Directors and Firm Administrators to ensure a full spectrum of input from senior law firm managers.
The study revealed that 95% of the law firms surveyed used dictation to some degree. The practice of traditional dictation was generally considered to be associated with the more senior lawyers. However, many CIOs and EDs recognized the benefits of all their lawyers using voice files to issue instructions or case/matter updates to support staff, especially via the lawyers' Smartphones.
