How does dictation assist you in your role?
I can touch type but dictation is so much faster than typing. I would not get through anything like as much work if I were typing everything. It is particularly convenient if summarising evidence from various sources or quoting passages or extracts from case law or legislation. It is also very useful for recording the outcome of meetings straight afterwards while conversations are fresh in your head.
What do you believe the advantages are of dictating vs typing?
The main advantage is that it saves time. Even though you have to settle whatever comes back from the typing pool, this is quicker than typing it yourself. When you are dealing with tables, headers, footers in particular, specific formatting requirements - I find it easier to dictate.
What are the benefits of using dictation on your iPhone/SmartPhone?
The ability to dictate on the run. If you are out of the office at a meeting and want to dictate a memo while everything is fresh in your head before you return to the office, you can dictate a memo, give it priority and it will be sitting on your desk top when you return to the office. Also, when at the Tribunal for multiple matters you can dictate the outcomes on the phone, send through to BigHand and again they will be waiting on your desk top when you get back to the office. It allows you to make the time in-between court commitments on any day productive by dictating while you are waiting for the next matter to come on. It can also be useful in taking statements off-site.
What would you say to a new lawyer to consider dictation?
You will be far more productive if you dictate and productive employees are more valuable.
